The Season of Fertility Begins

June welcomed the beginning of the Noongar season of Makuru. Makuru runs from June – July, and is known as the coldest and wettest season. Makuru was traditionally seen as a good time to move inland, away from the coast. Makuru is also known as the season of fertility. You may notice lots of animals pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming seasons. The colours in the BGCCI logo are drawn from the 6 Noongar seasons. The blue section of our logo represents the cool change that comes with Markuru.

BGCCI recently participated in the ceremonies around Reconciliation Week, which included a Bridge Walk into the heart of Goomburrup (Noongar word for Bunbury), and an official ceremony for national Sorry Day on 26 May. This day is set aside to reflect on the pain, hurt suffering and grief of the Stolen Generations and their families, and importantly recognise moments of resilience, healing and the significant power of saying “Sorry”.

The dates for Reconciliation Week are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision. This year’s theme is “More than a word. Reconciliation takes action”. BGCCI also attended the ECU reconciliation Movie night with special guest Lewis Jetta. In attending the Bunbury events for Reconciliation Week, it was incredibly humbling and inspiring to see so many people from all walks of life come together to show support for reconciliation and Aboriginal empowerment.

For the month of May, the BGCCI Business After Hours was hosted by South Regional Tafe (SRTafe) at the newly refurbished Epicure Training Restaurant. Â Our hosts treated us to the culinary stylings and exemplary 5 star service of their Hospitality Students. Â https://www.southregionaltafe.wa.edu.au/epicure-training-restaurant

It is fantastic to see the investment SRTafe has made in industry engagement and the level of two-way communication that is taking place. This all goes towards ensuring we are working in partnership and are equipped to provide the type of training that industry, businesses and the community will benefit from. This sets the scene to providing great pathways to jobs and careers of the future.

The chamber values the contribution that South Regional Tafe is making in the community, and we look forward to seeing the changes ahead under the leadership and experience that their new Managing Director - Darshi Ganeson-Oats, brings.
