CEO Update

With the Federal Election fast approaching, our business community is eager to hear clear, practical commitments from all sides of politics. Regional areas like the Bunbury Geographe Region have unique strengths and challenges, and it’s vital that Federal policy reflects this, not a one-size-fits-all, metro-centric approach.

From cutting red tape to improving access to skilled labour, businesses need more than promises, they need leadership and action. Digital infrastructure also remains a key concern, with many still facing unreliable connectivity. Despite years of surveys and consultation, businesses want to see results. Why can you access seamless coverage in rural Vietnam, yet hit multiple black spots when driving to Collie?

Investment in infrastructure is equally critical. The expansion of the Busselton Margaret River Airport presents enormous potential to unlock growth in tourism, streamline export and import opportunities, and better connect our region to domestic and international markets. It’s an opportunity that must be fully realised through coordinated Federal support.

Our region is growing and diversifying. While some may point to empty shopfronts, the bigger picture is one of progress. We’re seeing strong investment in future skills, such as over $1.5 million in robotics at Bunbury Senior High School. Our innovation sector is emerging, and there’s a genuine appetite for collaboration across industries.

We are also witnessing a new wave of innovation across the Bunbury Geographe region, a shift that is transforming our economy and building long-term resilience.

In education, schools are investing in STEM, robotics, coding and future-focused programs. Partnerships between educators and industry are equipping students with the skills needed for careers in advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and agritech.

In manufacturing and industry, the region is embracing the transition to clean energy technologies. Collie is attracting investment in battery production, recycling and green innovation, while local manufacturers are adopting automation and new production methods to remain competitive.

Our agribusiness sector is moving up the value chain through boutique processing, smart farming technologies and direct-to-market models. Across viticulture, horticulture and dairy, producers are using data, drones and digital tools to drive sustainability and efficiency.

In tourism, experience-based products are being developed to showcase our food, culture and environment. Regions like Ferguson Valley and Donnybrook-Balingup are seeing tourism operators enhance their reach through digital platforms, storytelling and visitor engagement tools.

Infrastructure is evolving too. The expansion of the Busselton Margaret River Airport is a game-changer, opening doors for tourism growth, freight opportunities, and market connectivity. Local governments are also beginning to explore smart infrastructure, sustainability initiatives and improved digital services.

Real growth requires collaboration, between all levels of government, industry, education and community. Decisions made in Canberra must be informed by local insight and lived experience. Chambers like ours play a vital role in ensuring the region’s voice is heard, and its opportunities supported.

With the right backing, the Bunbury Geographe Region can continue to innovate, diversify and lead as a dynamic and thriving economic hub for Western Australia.

As always, our team at the Chamber are here to help. If you have any questions or would like to book in a time to see us, please call 9791 2292.
