One of Bunbury’s most iconic retail businesses, Bon Marché, is set to be offered for sale following a century of continuous operation by the Craddock family.

The milestone comes after the store recently celebrated 100 years in business, marking four generations of family ownership and cementing its place as the longest established clothing store in Bunbury. While the business itself will go to market, the landmark building on the corner of Stephen and Victoria Streets will remain in the ownership of the Craddock family, with long-leases available.

The centenary was commemorated with an exhibition at the Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre, where memorabilia spanning decades was displayed. Former staff were invited to celebrate, sharing stories of their time working in the store.

Bon Marché’s story dates back to 1925, when Louis Craddock, then a commercial traveller, purchased the business from Harry Trenoweth. He and his wife Winifred operated the store as a mini department store, offering everything from haberdashery to apparel. Known for his innovation, Louis oversaw major upgrades to the premises in the late 1920s.

At the time, the South Western Times reported on the store’s striking presentation, noting its stainless steel window casings and prominent frontage along Stephen Street. Further renovations in 1937 introduced a cantilevered veranda and an Art Deco façade, helping establish the building as a standout in Bunbury’s streetscape.

Beyond retail, Louis Craddock was recognised for his strong community spirit. Before the Country Women’s Association had its own facilities, he provided space within the store for meetings and for mothers, an uncommon gesture at the time. His advertising style was equally memorable, known for its bold and quirky tone.

Following the deaths of Louis and Winifred in 1951, their sons Len and Keith took over, ushering in a new era of growth. The business expanded significantly, including extensions in the 1970s and the acquisition of a separate premises for menswear.

Stephen Craddock later joined the business, navigating a rapidly changing retail landscape. To remain competitive, Bon Marché joined national buying group Associated Retailers, increasing its purchasing power and marketing reach. In 1984, Stephen and his wife Maria purchased the menswear division, later consolidating ownership of the entire business.

Since 2000, Bon Marché has operated as a specialist menswear store, stocking both formal and casual clothing, including leading brands such as RM Williams and Rodd & Gunn.

A member of the Chamber for many years, Stephen Craddock has often commented that the success of the business can be attributed to the loyal staff who have served generations of customers. Four members of the current staff have been there for around 20 years apiece, an attractive characteristic for a potential buyer.

As the business prepares to enter a new chapter, the sale marks the end of an era for a family enterprise that has played a significant role in the region’s retail and community life.
