BREC | The Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre was built in 1990 with donations from the Bunbury community to provide a place for everyone to experience the transformative power of the arts.
Each one of those donations made the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre what it is today. And 36 years later, BREC is still working to make sure everyone, especially children, has the opportunity to see that one performance which could spark a lifetime of creativity.
To continue in that mission, BREC is raising funds through its Annual Giving Campaign, with the goal of raising $100,000 by 1 May 2026.
With the current total of funds raised sitting at just over $xxxx, BREC is appealing to businesses and the people of the South West to make themselves a part of the story by donating what they can.
BREC aims to use the funds raised to support programming for children, provide hands-on school holiday workshops, a subsidised Creative Learning program for schools, and contribute to the cost of buses to get more students to BREC - ensuring access for all, regardless of financial or geographic barriers.
In 2024, the AWESOME Festival for Bright Young Things brought 4300 people through BREC’s doors over two days. With donations through this campaign, BREC will partner with Barking Gecko Arts to bring WA’s flagship arts event back to the South West in October. The aim is to make it even more accessible for young families, with even more free activities, new regional artist commissions, and a brand-new Barking Gecko show on our big stage.
A report released by Creative Australia in 2025 compiled a range of studies which show that participation in the arts can contribute to improved social and economic outcomes for kids from low socio-economic backgrounds, as well as supporting young people’s social and emotional development.
Music teacher Mackenzie King said she saw a great benefit to her Donnybrook Senior High School students who were offered the opportunity to rehearse on Stage One at BREC, as well as sit in on a soundcheck for Melbourne Theatre Company show Slap Bang Kiss, prior to the 2025 Bunbury Eisteddfod.
“The eyes of our regional students, who ordinarily only play in school undercover areas or halls, were opened to what a professional environment looks and feels like.”
“I’ve seen first hand how amazing things can unfold when a local centre like BREC says yes to young people with big curiosity.”
Jackie Ross is the Relationship Development Committee Chair at BREC, as well as being a practicing music therapist. She said donations to BREC’s Annual Giving Campaign will be crucial to lowering the barrier of entry for local school kids.
“It’s so important for students to have access to the arts. Financial support from the community will not only lower the cost for schools and parents, it will also make it easier for the BREC team to continue bringing high-quality productions to the South West.”
“Whether it’s a child’s first show, a joyful time with family, or a spark of confidence and creativity, these arts experiences build imagination, empathy and belonging.”[ES1.1]
Every donation, big or small, makes a difference. As a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity, all donations over $2 are tax deductible and, with six donation tiers and customisable donation amounts, people can choose to give as much or as little as they like. Every dollar given adds up to outcomes for the community.
