A recent visit to Bunbury Airport felt like stepping straight into a movie scene, and one that brings a dose of adventure to our region.
New Chamber member Open Air Adventures is led by husband-and-wife duo Hayley and Johan, whose story began in the skies. They met years ago working as pilot and cabin crew, a real-life aviation love story that has now landed here in the South West.
The star of the show is Winnie, a rare 1941 Boeing Stearman biplane. Originally built as an Army Air Corps training aircraft, Winnie hails from a the golden age of flying. Of the roughly 10,000 Stearmans ever built, only a small number remain, making this aircraft something truly special.
Winnie herself is a masterpiece of old-school engineering. Hayley and Johan rebuilt the bottom wings entirely from scratch using original handbooks, following the same techniques used when the aircraft was first constructed. The top wings, dating back to 1945, are original and still proudly part of the aircraft. An eye-catching touch, are the original wings now hanging inside their hangar, a striking reminder of the history and craftsmanship behind the restoration.
Soon, Open Air Adventures will begin open-cockpit flights that showcase a different era of aviation. Winnie produces higher G-forces than modern planes, creating a flying experience that is immersive and hands-on. Think vintage helmets, old-school goggles, wind in your face, and unforgettable views over our beautiful region. While final preparations are underway, pre-launch packages are available.
Open Air Adventures adds something exciting to the region with a blend of nostalgia and adrenaline that invites locals and our visitors alike to experience the thrill, history, and magic of flight.
